When a quesadilla costs more than your pride

As a Mexican exchange student in Norway, I went out for tacos and found good food, shocking prices, and a new appreciation for cheap street food back home.

TACO: In my opinion, you guys should unionize or something considering it’s seemingly a part of your Friday culture.

This is an apropos. Apropos is the free column where Studvest journalists can write about whatever they want. The language is often informal and playful. Note: satire, sarcasm, and irony may occur, and the apropos should be taken with a grain of salt.

The other day, after having my one (and only) class at the law faculty and realizing that the cafeteria there closes earlier than my will to study, I found myself starving. Too lazy to cook, yet cursed with a foreign phone number that won’t let me use delivery apps, I was left with the prehistoric solution: going outside.

After a dramatic internal debate, I picked «Los Tacos». With a name like that, what other cuisine could they possibly serve? It also felt timely: Mexico had just celebrated its 215th Independence Day. Surely, this was destiny, and an excuse to eat my feelings in tortillas.

I entered the restaurant like a celebrity and rehearsing my best Mexican accent for the big moment… only to realize there was no one to impress. Self-service only. Tragic. Still, the menu looked promising: burritos, quesadillas, «street tacos» (aka tacos). My heart said yes.

My wallet, however, said absolutely not. How Norwegians are okay with paying almost 200 kroner for A SINGLE quesadilla? Are you also thirsty? No worries! That would be an extra 70 kroner for an authentic Mexican soda.

And yet, I’ll confess the food was actually good. But will I ever emotionally recover from paying 250 kroner for what would’ve cost me 25 kroner back home in Mexico? Doubtful.

So, dear Norwegians let me tell you: you deserve better. Part of the beauty of Mexican food is that it is affordable, easy to make, in most cases, and delicious. In my opinion, you guys should unionize or something considering it’s seemingly a part of your Friday culture.

But the story doesn’t end here, though. Much to my pleasure, and my bank account´s horror I´ve discovered TWO more Mexican restaurants in town. Rumor has it, one is even more expensive. Stay tuned
